Embracing the Rain | Why Some of the Best Childhood Memories Happen in the Storm
As parents, we often see dark clouds rolling in and immediately think our plans are ruined.
The outdoor playtime gets cut short.
The park trip gets postponed.
The family photos get rescheduled.
But children?
They see something entirely different.
They see puddles waiting to be splashed in.
Tiny rivers rushing along the sidewalk.
Raindrops dancing on their skin.
A whole new adventure unfolding right in front of them.
The photos from this rainy afternoon are a perfect reminder that some of the most meaningful moments happen when we stop trying to control the day and simply lean into it.
Seeing the World Through Their Eyes
One of my favorite ways to document childhood is to get down on their level and pay attention to what captures their curiosity.
Not what I think is interesting.
What they think is interesting.
On this particular afternoon, it wasn't a grand adventure or a planned activity that held their attention. It was rainwater flowing through a gutter.
That's it.
Three children completely fascinated by something many adults would walk right past without a second glance.
And honestly? That's the magic.
Children find wonder in the simplest things.
When we slow down enough to notice what they're noticing, we begin capturing more than photographs—we begin preserving the way childhood felt.
Don't Put the Camera Away
When the weather turns gloomy, many people instinctively put their cameras away.
I encourage you to do the opposite.
Rainy days create some of the most emotional and authentic photographs because children naturally become more present. They're exploring, experimenting, and discovering.
The smiles are genuine.
The curiosity is real.
The moments aren't forced.
Instead of worrying about perfect hair or clean clothes, focus on documenting the experience.
The wet strands of hair stuck to their cheeks.
The bare feet on the pavement.
The excitement of finding a puddle deep enough to splash.
These details may seem small now, but they're often the very things you'll miss someday.
Capture How It Felt
Years from now, your children won't remember whether it rained on a random Tuesday afternoon.
But they'll remember running outside when everyone else stayed in.
They'll remember splashing barefoot in puddles.
They'll remember exploring with their siblings and finding joy in the unexpected.
And when they see these photographs, they won't just remember what happened.
They'll remember how it felt.
The freedom.
The adventure.
The wonder.
That's the beauty of documenting everyday life. Not every photograph needs to be perfectly planned or beautifully posed. Sometimes the most powerful images come from saying "yes" to the rain and letting childhood unfold exactly as it was meant to.
Because childhood isn't made up of perfect days.
It's made up of moments like these. The unexpected ones. The messy ones. The rain-soaked memories that become stories you'll tell for years to come.
And those are always worth capturing. ☔✨
